Wiki User I had the same problem with my yard man machine. It just started slipping one day going down hill and had been doing it ever since. Checked all Pulleys including variator, All good Opened rear end, all gears good Finally I adjusted the linkage from peddle to variator to tighten the front drive belt.
That changed things slippage went away and the machine pulls like new. But had to adjust it all the way out to handle the slippage.

The one with the fain in it is an overhead view below the battery and on top of the transmission on the back of the mower. I need to take the nut on top of the fan off to get the belt around the pully you can see the bracket that the pully sits "in" in the breakout. I have 2 problems:. How do I keep that from turning? I can turn the fan by hand if the brake is on or not, and if the transmission is engaged or not. There is a pull-out lever that disengages the transmission, but that pully always freely turns so when I get a wrench around it I cannot stop the shaft and everything from turning.

They're more concerned with making it difficult for the belt to come off. Though, this also helps keep it in place while you fiddle with the other end. You may need to strongarm it a bit, but try to bend them back to the original positions. If you really want to get the fan off, you need a crow-foot wrench and will probably need to hold the pulley with a strap wrench and work against that. Don't be surprised if it's a reverse thread.

OK, here's how I did it: I put the back on using Harper's method, a slotted screwdriver without taking any of that apart. For the front, there are 2 pulleys on a shaft coming out of the engine.
This needs to be removed by holding the shaft with a pipe wrench and taking the bolt off the bottom of the bottom pulley. By far, the most common reason for hydrostatic transmission failure is old hydraulic fluid. John Deere states that "Operating outside of the recommended oil air temperature range may cause premature hydrostatic transmission failure. This decay results in air and atmospheric moisture becoming blended into the oil, properly called entraining. Oil that is entrained has inferior hydraulic properties in comparison to fresh oil, resulting in less than optimal system function.
Entrained oil must be drained completely.
After positioning the lawnmower to drain properly -- typically this means on a perfectly flat, level surface -- remove the drain plug and allow the machine to stand for several days until every last vestige of the old oil has dripped out.The hydrostatic transmission in your lawn tractor requires servicing that includes draining the old hydrostatic oil, changing the filter and adding new hydrostatic oil. Slide an oil-catch drain pan directly under the hydrostatic transmission oil drain plug to catch the old transmission oil.
The transmission oil drain plug is generally located on the side of the transmission towards the bottom. Some lawn tractor make and model hydrostatic transmissions may have one or more transmission oil drain plugs, one for the hydrostatic transmission side the other for the differential gear side.
Clean dirt and debris from around the hydrostatic transmission oil reservoir cap with a clean shop towel to prevent the hydrostatic transmission and the transmission oiling system from contamination. Some hydrostatic transmissions have more than one transmission oil reservoir located under the lawn tractor seat: one that fills the hydrostatic transmission side and the other fills the differential gear side.
Both the differential and hydrostatic transmission are connected by an internal cavity. Loosen the hydrostatic transmission oil reservoir cap by hand to allow the transmission oil to drain. A loose cap allows air to enter the oiling system, eliminating air vacuum and providing better oil flow drainage.
Unscrew the hydrostatic transmission oil drain plugs with a socket wrench, and allow the transmission oil to fully drain. Screw the transmission oil drain plugs into the transmission.
Torque the transmission oil drain plugs with a socket and torque wrench. Refer to your lawn tractor manufacturer's owner operator's manual for specific transmission oil drain plug torque specifications. Slide the transmission oil drain pan directly under the hydrostatic transmission oil filter. Some make and model hydrostatic transmissions are equipped with an transmission oil filter to clean the transmission oil, lengthening the transmission oil life.

Troy Bilt Lawn Tractor hydrostatic transmission problems. Hello Everyone, Once again I am turning to the SD boards to see if anyone here can give me some insight to a problem. A little less than a year ago my wife and I purchased a Troy Bilt 46" Horse lawn tractor for our 5 acres.
This was the top of the line Troy Bilt and one of it's features was a hydrostatic transmission. Unfortunately, at least in our case, it has turned out to be it's weakness. After owning it for three months the transmission failed and had to be sent in to be repaired. We got it back and it has ran fine until today, when once again the tranny has failed in the same way.
The transmission is always engaged and to put it in neutral so you can push the tractor you have to pull a lever at the back of the transmission that dis-engages it. When you are done and want to re-engage the transmission, you take the lever and push it to activate it.
Well, here is were the problem happens. The event described is the same one that happened the first time. I put it in neutral, pushed the mower into the garage and performed maintainance that needed doing. Push the mower back out, push the lever to re-engage the transmission, start the mower and nothing.
The tractor will not move forward or reverse, instead the only thing that happens is that a whine sounds when trying to move the tranny lever into either forward or reverse.
Then, just to make it as annoying as possible, I try to put the mower into neutral again so I can put it back into the garage and it will not go into neutral. I can take my hand and follow the lever back to the transmission housing and confirm that it is moving a lever when it is being pulled or pushed the lever that moves the tranny in and out of neutral. The last time this happend I was told a valve inside the tranny broke and that caused the problem, so I have to assume that the same thing as happend.
The tractor comes with a 2 year factory warranty, so it will be covered under warranty, however it is MY responsiblity to transport the mower to the factory service center.
Well, easier said than done. How in the hell could I possible get it onto a truck or trailer? Last time I returned to Lowes and pitched a fit at the manager until he agreed to send a Lowes delivery truck out with a lift to retrieve the tractor and send it to the repair center.
That was after only owning it for a few months, I am not so sure that I can count on Lowes doing that again. But, that isn't my main question.
